This book tells the story of a servant boy as he follows, and does his best to protect his master through treacherous waters. It is in the 1490s, in Pergamontio, a kingdom full of deceit, dishonesty, and conspiracy that this boy lives. It is thought that his master is a magician, and that he is his apprentice. As to the truth of that, I shall not be the one to reveal.

The main characters of this book are Fabrizio, Mangus, Princess Teresina, Scarazoni, and Queen Jovanna. Fabrizio is the pawn of this story. He is Mangus's servant and friend. Mangus is an X-magician, and a great believer in truth, honesty, and facts. Princess Teresina is a ten year old girl who is obsessed with conspiracy, and is the daughter of King Claudio and Queen Jovanna. Scarazoni is the king's closest advisor, and is distrusted by all except King Claudio. Queen Jovanna is a sad and desperate woman, who will do anything to save her family, friends, and kingdom from the grasping hands of the greedy.

The main theme of this book is conspiracy, honesty, and kith and kin. I truly got a kick out of this book, I liked that Fabrizio is so faithful to Mangus, and will do anything he thinks is right to protect him. I dislike that Princess Teresina is addicted to adrenaline. I think the author wants us to grasp the concept that to tell the truth sometimes you have to tell a white lie or two.

My true thoughts on Avi are that he has a certain way of writing that makes complicated plots seem like a picnic in the park. He is a perfect children's writer because of this knack. I recommend Midnight Magic to ages 8 and up, due to mild violence and suspense. This is a must read. Six stars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
